Allotments

I'm fascinated by the displays in these allotments and often peer through the fence when
I dog walk in this Edinburgh city park.

The photos were taken at various times between June and August.

There are twenty one allotment sites around the city and  plots measuring about 10x20 meters are
available to rent by local people without gardens.

Access to the gardens is limited to allotment holders only and the gates are locked at all times.
The hedge of  vegetation (thorny shrubs and nettles) on the outside of the perimeter fence
sometimes made it a bit tricky taking photos through the wires.

Central pathway between the two access gates.

Outside the park, the building at the end of the street is a well known private school built in the 1860s
in the Scottish baronial style and designed by architect David Bryce.

Thank you for visiting.

Yes that is nice those allotments. We have them too around big cities and even here in the country near out village. We once hired on for our own vegetables, but it was to much work, we gave up after a few years.

It's nice to allow people to garden. I'm noticing all the Crocosmia Lucifer, I like them when they bloom, though mine tend to flop.

Hello, Ruby
What a beautiful landscape.
I like the first photo very much. The photo is telling a heartwarming story. People leave their bicycles, enjoying their gardening. It must be refreshing time for them.
Have a good weekend.

Hello, Ruby! The residential area on the rolling hills where I live is surrounded by the fields and paddies. There are some rental allotments. The views are similar with those in your photos but people grow mainly vegetables, and the high spires seen in the distance is distinctly European.. Gardening would be one of the best ways to relax ourselves and to learn the art of waiting while being tuned with nature of soil, insects, and green. Were you okay from the thorns and nettles? Wonderful shots!

How fascinating! I have never before heard of allottments, but this is quite fascinating. I love all the color and diversity in the flowers. I guess I would have expected all vegetables... so it is a nice surprise to see this. What a great idea to have these rentals

Thanks a lot for your comment, Ruby!
Allotments a quite common all over Germany, especially in bigger town and cities, where a lot of people do not have an own garden behind their house or apartment. They are a world of their own. And as you found out, they are a great source for nice photo scenes, although they are far away from the perfect style of British garden culture... ;-)

Allotments are so much like secret oases in a city, only available to those with a key. Lovely to be able to peek in like this. I've seen the equivalent in Vancouver and Montreal, but not as lush as what you've pictured here.

You got some super pictures of the allotments though, with their flowers as well. I'm lucky to be enjoying a bunch of sweet peas thanks to a neighbour, but only a few flowers now, in my own garden, so, it's good to see these pictures of flowers. AND the ones of the dogs too.

These are beautiful allotments! The ones I know from Munich are quite different - very manicured and orderly for the most part. I must say that I prefer yours - I think they speak to my Scottish soul : )

The bikes resting outside the fence is so charming.......I'm a huge fan of bicycles so any photo with them sparks my interest!
Lovely gardens you were able to capture......hope no nettles found their way onto you!
Seems that the gardens are winding down in Scotland as well as here in Colorado. We have such a short season around here and struggle with some crops because of it.
I enjoyed your photos and a glimpse into your world.

Familiar sights seen here as well. Actually I once tried growing vegetables in an allotment but the place was a bit far away from my house and it was much more challenging than I had expected to get a good harvest. It took more time, energy and love to do that.
Maybe next time, if any?!
Enjoy your harvest season, Ruby!

I love Edinburgh, we nearly moved there once and I think it is one of the best old cities around.
The architecture is fantastic and the Art Gallery!
Great to see your photos of the allotments and park. I also have a thing for those magical spaces that are hidden away!

Such beautiful gardens with all the rich vegetation. In Germany we have something like that as well, called "Schrebergarten". It's wonderful for people for live in apartments and don't have a garden.

The allotments look wonderfully green and fertile. Love all the little garden sheds too. It must be a little haven for those who hold allotments.
