The Boathouse

Walking in the grounds of a country estate near Edinburgh.

Late afternoon sun showers golden light on the land.

The grand house and landscaped grounds were designed in the late 1700s.
At present the house is not open to the public.

The curling house used to store equipment.

This man made pond, curling house and boat house were probably constructed in the early 1800s.

Until about fifty years ago ponds often froze over in winter and curling was a popular winter activity.

  Curling at Eglinton Castle,Ayrshire ,Scotland  - 1860.
The curling house is on the left of the picture.

The boathouse reminds me of a dream portal  -  guarded on either side by two
  now decapitated stone lions.

The Voyage of the Dreamer  -  oil painting on canvas by Meg Watson (1950-2002)

Thank you for visiting.

I like it so much to walk with you through the beautiful landscapes. I feel like I am there myself. The boathouse is so special, I have never seen this before. When the sun shines the woods look a lot better with the light falling through the trees.

Such an enchanting place to stroll! You're so right about the remains of the curling house looking like a portal to another world.

I like it when autumn leaves gets ablaze softly with gold tint in the late afternoon sun. I’m so attracted to the stone wall of the curling house. Thank you, ruby, I felt consoled all through the photos.

Thank you for the lovely walk and introduction to this beautiful park.
The quiet is palpable. A friend of mine is a curling fan, but I did not know there was a special building to store the equipment !

This weather, sunny days and blue skies are so good for walking and for showing up the amazing colours which seem to be particularly startling this year - and which you have captured so well. So good too, to see Meg's image The Voyage of the Dreamer, and its ethereal colours

I knew curling at the winter Olympic Games for the first time. Japanese women's team is now facing tough competition for the last two places of Sochi Winter Olympic Games. The play seems much harder than it looks.
I love soft, tender hue of autumn colors in the shots. Your dogs look happy running around under the comfortable weather.
Happy days ahead, Ruby.

Wonderful set of pictures. Most of our trees do not shed their leaves in autumn - so we don't get this rich pallet of colours. I miss it!!

It looks like I've missed quite a few posts, dear Ruby... don't like missing so much beauty! :)
I peeked at some of the previous posts as well...gorgeous....and your "October" painting is inspirational as always...
Now this park is dreamy...and what a pretty curling house...speaks to my romantic nature...(poor lions, though!)
Your friend's painting is beautiful....
Thank you so much for visiting me, and yes, that choco goodness was indeed "scrummy"! :) I added more flour, so it was the texture of a moist pound cake. Let me know please if you would like the recipe....
